Melbourne History Talks: History of Spiritualism in Victoria

On 23 May 2024, Andrew Singleton, Professor of Sociology and Social Research at Deakin University, delivered a talk at the Library at The Dock as part of the Melbourne History Talks series, hosted by the City of Melbourne Libraries. The talk traced the history of Spiritualism in Victoria, beginning with its emergence in Geelong in the early 1850s, through the founding of the Victorian Spiritualists' Union in 1871 (originally called the Victorian Association of Progressive Spiritualists), the interwar revival and culminating in the Spiritualist Renaissance of the 1970s.

Andrew Singleton is co-author, with Professor Matt Tomlinson (ANU), of the forthcoming book Let the Dead Speak: Spiritualism in Australia (Manchester University Press, 2025).

This is a recording of the event, allowing listeners to revisit the stories and insights shared on the night.
